Tips to Improve Sleep

This blog will continue our 2 part series of discussing the importance of quality sleep. Getting a solid eight hours in is key, but the level of quality is just as important. You want to not only be able to go to sleep quickly, but stay asleep throughout the night. Some ways to achieve this goal are;

-Exercise more intensely, allowing you to reach a level of exhaustion. If you can do this at the end of the day right before you intend to sleep is even better.

-Block out noise.  Some people who struggle with sleep issues, random noises can be distracting and disruptive to the sleep cycle. White noise is a great choice for those who have a difficult time falling sleep. A fan is another great option because it is inexpensive, provides a bit of breezy, and offers a slight noise that will still allow you to hear important noises throughout the night.

-Manage your physical health.  Many individuals experience some level of physical discomfort or pain. This can be a large factor in getting a restful night’s sleep. Even a few small changes in lifestyle can make a large impact.

-Find a bedtime ritual that works for you.  A routine is very effective in creating good sleep habits in children, the same is true for adults. Regardless of the habits you choose, a ritual can help you find a way to maximize the amount of quality sleep you experience throughout the night.

-Empower yourself to reduce stress.  Most people experience some level of stress, whether it be family drama, workplace dilemmas, finances, or health related issues. This stress can lead to a variety of problems from pain to sleep disruption. A person should try to find ways to minimize this stress if at all possible. There are many relaxation techniques, such as meditation, exercise, or therapy. Empowerment is a great option that can help reduce stress because it allows us to take control of our lives and manage our stress in an effective manner. It is important to find a method that works for you.

-Keep a pen and notebook next to your bed.  This can allow you to take notes of things that pop into your head at night, without having to dwell on them all night long. It is a good practice to begin if you are someone who has a difficult time turning your brain off at night. Solving all of the worlds problems at night is not possible, but if you have a great idea, you can jot it down and devote the rest of your night to relaxing slumber.
