A Vancouver Chiropractor Discusses How Concussions Affect School Performance

A new study has shown that brain rest is extremely important for children in school, this is especially true following a concussion. The study was from Pediatrics surveyed 349 students between the ages of 5 and 18 who’d had a concussion in the past 4 weeks, their parents were also surveyed. Children and parents were asked questions about academic concerns or problems following the concussion. The children were given several memory and concentration tests, and the results were categorized based on lingering symptoms.

The results showed that 88% of children who had not yet recovered reported symptoms including:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Problems academically

In addition, a large number of these kids were having trouble with their academic work, such as needing extra time for homework, having difficulty studying or taking notes, and being concerned that their grades were suffering as a result.

How children can get brain rest

Following a school sport injury, brain rest is very important for those recovering from a concussion, particularly for children, whose brains are still developing. This involves avoiding any cognitive activity that causes stress to the brain’s metabolism. Research has shown that proper brain rest can help children recover from a concussion more quickly, as much as 50% quicker.

Academically, some children may need time off school, then a gradual return to school that may include shorter days.

It’s not just schoolwork that can stress a child’s brain. Video games and smartphone apps can lead to difficulty recovering. Helping your child find a balance between rest and activity is a great way to ensure them the recovery time they need.

School adjustments while symptoms last may include less homework, more time to complete work, or postponed deadlines or tests.
